International Federation calls for immediate action:

Prepare for potential flood disaster in Southern Africa

With the region affected by heavy rains and floods that have spread to countries including Zambia, Malawi and Madagascar, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has issued a warning of a potentially disastrous flood crisis in Southern Africa.

More rain is expected which could last until April and if this happens Southern Africa will face major flooding with potentially catastrophic consequences. There needs to be an immediate response to the potential crisis and disaster preparedness activities must be developed without delay, according to the head of the International Federation operations support, Peter Rees.

Mozambique is at particular risk since it is only now starting to recover from floods last year which affected around 60,000 people.

The Mozambique Red Cross has assisted with emergency evacuations, provided tents, mosquito nets and other non–food items to hundreds of families and, although it still has stocks and volunteers in reserve, it badly needs cash to keep the logistical operation going, especially as the nation faces another crisis.

The International Federation recently released one million Swiss francs from its Disaster Relief Emergency Funds to support Red Cross societies in affected countries and a preliminary appeal is underway.
