Mental Health Europe calls for better deal for patients
Mental Health Europe [MHE] has contributed towards the joint responses to the Commission’s communication on health services which have been submitted by the European Public Health Alliance and the European Patients Forum.
MHE has called for health service organisations to be based on principles of accessibility, co–ordinated care, continuity of care, effectiveness and respect for human rights.
Amongst the points made by MHE is the belief that the patient’s autonomy and freedom of choice must be respected and that patients must be supplied with information which will enable them to make their own judgements on health treatment and on their own status.
A community framework should be established, says MHE, to support the provision of mental health services which also believes that in many member states, the increase in the number of mental health hospitals has led to an inadequate response to the need for community–based services.
Action is called for at EU level to influence the development of community mental health care. For further information visit the MHE website at: www.mhe-sme.org
