Evaluation secures funding for depression initiative

In response to the fact that depression is now the most common cause of non–fatal disability in Australia, the Government launched the National Depression Initiative and an independent public company, Beyond Blue, was formed in 2000 to take it forward, with a $17.5 million Government grant for five years.

The company, which works with a range of partners from governments to schools to provide national leadership for the awareness, prevention and early intervention of depression and related disorders, has secured further funds of $39.6 million over five years, based–on an evaluation of outcomes made by the University of Melbourne.

The evaluation concluded that a further five–year funding period would allow many of the partially realised objectives to be fully realised, and could maximize Australia’s potential to prevent depression and minimize its effects.
