Nurses strike averted by three weeks of consultation
Industrial action by nurses in Northern Ireland has been averted since talks between the nurses unions and their Health Service employers started recently. The nurses want reduced working hours and a pay increase, while those who work in Dublin are also seeking a special allowance.
Some 40,000 members of the Irish Nurses Organisation and the Psychiatric Nurses Association said they would to start a work–to–rule, which was to include a ban on the use of telephones, except in the most essential situations. But the unions and the Irish Government agreed that intensive talks would start instead and progress would be reviewed.
