Africa:

Conference backs national goal to combat HIV/AIDS

Discussions about the National Strategic Plan on HIV, AIDS and sexually transmitted infections for 2007–2011 took place in March at a two–day national consultative conference. Attended by representatives from Government, business and civil society, the conference welcomed the draft National Strategic Plan as a milestone in South Africa’s efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.

The four priority areas of the plan comprise prevention; treatment, care and support; research, monitoring and evaluation; human and legal rights.

Further input to reduce the number of new HIV infections and mitigate the impact of AIDS on individuals, families and communities will be incorporated into the final plan to be adopted by the new South African AIDS council within the next month.

The plan will serve as a national framework for HIV/AIDS response and all sectors will develop their programmes in line with it.

The National Strategic Plan has been commended by the United Nation’s resident representative in South Africa, Ms Scholastica Kimaryo, for its efforts and innovative approach to HIV/AIDS.
