Africa: Liberia

Refugee agency continues repatriation of displaced

The United Nations [UN] refugee agency is going ahead with its programme of repatriation for the many thousands of refugees from Liberia who are presently camped out in Guinea which itself is facing political turmoil and instability.

To date 600 refugees have been returned to Liberia, but there are no more of these displaced persons presently willing to volunteer to return home.
The number of people relying on the UN High Commissioner for Refugees [UNHCR] aid in Guinea has been steadily reduced and presently stands at 31,000, including 5,000 from Sierra Leone and 4,500 from Côte d’Ivoire.

During the second half of January more than 100 people, mainly civilians, were killed amid protests and strikes over the choice of Eugene Camara as Prime Minister.

Since 2004, UNHCR has helped 90,000 Liberians to return home, one half of them from Guinea. For further information on the scale of the refugee problem in the region, visit the United Nations website at: www.un.org
