Ministry of Social Transformation swings into action
The Bureau of Social Policy, Research and Planning Unit previously announced by the Ministry of Social Transformation has started work, according to an announcement by the Permanent Secretary, Shirley Farnum, who said that some members of the staff were already in place.
The Unit’s director is Kirk Humphrey, formerly with the Child Care Board, and his deputy is RoseAnn Richards, a lecturer of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill.
The scope of the unit is to focus on the development of social policies which would seek to remove social and economic inequalities through the promotion of social assistance, development and empowerment programmes.
“The initial work of this Bureau will include the local co–ordination of a national survey on living conditions in Barbados and the preparation of this country’s first Human Development Report,” said Ms Farnum.
“It will also function as the Secretariat for Government’s Social Council and the Bureau will work closely with the heads of the relevant agencies and civil society organisations,” she said.
