Australia Institute of Health and Social Welfare report:

Trends in chronic diseases – national survey published

Some fatal diseases have reduced in incidence while rates of others have seen a sharp increase, reveals a national study Indicators for chronic disease and their determinants, carried out by the Australian Institute of Health and Social Welfare.

The report focused on12 conditions that represent a large burden of disease in Australia and found a reduction in the number of heart attacks and deaths afterward, along with a continued decline in the number of people who smoke. However, around half the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in non–remote areas are daily smokers.

Rates of bowel cancer have risen in the past decade and it is now the second most common cancer in Australians, but survival rates have improved. Lung cancer was found to be is less common in males but the incidence has increased in females over the past 20 years.

There has been a sharp rise in the proportion of Australians with Type 2 Diabetes which has more than doubled in 10 years.

The number of overweight or obese adults has also risen and exercise is an area where the study shows significant room for improvement, with two–thirds of Australian adults not exercising enough to benefit their health. National guidelines recommend at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity every day.
