Rhode Island: Central Falls High School
Tuberculosis tests prove negative in school children
Tests carried out in response to a report of a student with TB at Central Falls High School in Rhode Island have come back negative. The Department of Health says no new cases of active TB were identified and a smaller than expected number of students and staff had positive skin test results.
The results give reassurance since at any one time, in any group of people in the US who are tested for TB, between five and 15 per cent would be expected to have a positive skin test result. A positive test result in those without symptoms represents either a false positive test or a case of latent TB that they have had for some time. Those with latent TB are not contagious, said the Director of Health.
The Rhode Island Department of Health will continue to monitor the situation.
