Australia: Mental health college supports new initiative
Five–year plan to improve co–ordination of health care
The recent Australian Government announcement of a five–year plan to improve the co–ordination of clinical care for those with severe mental illness, has been welcomed by the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses.
The plan, which has been valued at $191 million, is intended to increase the facilities for cooperation between specialist mental health nurses, GPs and psychiatrists in the community.
The College President, Dr Stephen Elsom, has pointed out that the ability of GPs and psychiatrists to engage specialist mental health nurses will help many who would not otherwise have been able to benefit from treatment in the community.
“Unfortunately,” he said, “there has often been a substantial gap between the care and treatment offered by the primary health care sector and that offered by specialist mental health services. By engaging the services of specialist mental health nurses, GPs and other community–based organisations will be able to offer treatment to people with severe mental disorders who might otherwise have fallen through this gap.”
The scheme will not operate fully until the end of December 2008. when the nurses employed under this scheme must have full credentials from the College. For fuller information on this scheme, visit the website of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses at: www.acmhn.org.
