Canada: More research, care and education called for
Drive for awareness and understanding of autism
The month of October marks the commencement of a drive to promote greater understanding of autism, its effect on both the family and social life.
The aim, says About Health Canada, is to promote dialogue on autism and to increase Canadians’ awareness and understanding of the disorder.
Autism Spectrum Disorder [ASD], says the organisation, affects individuals from all walks of life, as well as their families, friends and caregivers. ASD can be defined by certain behaviours which come in combinations and degrees of intensity that vary in each child and adult. The symptoms often include difficulties with social interaction, communication and behaviour.
International studies suggest that autism affects one in every thousand children, and although much progress has been made, the cause of autism is still not known, nor are the most effective treatments and interventions.
For further information on the study of autism and the problems involved, visit the website of About Health Canada, at: www.hc-sg.ca.
