250,000 people displaced following election results:

US steps–up aid for Kenya after widespread violence

An extra $4.8 million in humanitarian aid to assist vulnerable and displaced Kenyans after violence recently erupted across the country will be provided by the US Agency for International Development [USAID]. This is in addition to $200,000 which went to the Kenya Red Cross to buy and distribute emergency relief supplies.

Violence broke out on December 30, 2007, in response to the disputed presidential election results. The new money will go to non–governmental organisations and other international organisations for health, food security, water, sanitation and hygiene as well as temporary emergency shelters.

So far up to 250,000 people, mostly in western areas of Kenya, have been displaced from their homes and several hundred have been killed. An estimated 2,000 Kenyans have fled to Uganda according to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

USAID currently supports development activities worth more than $300 million in Kenya and its staff based in the country will continue to monitor the situation and co–ordinate responses with other agencies.
