Report on the risk of harmful chemicals to youngsters:

Children’s environmental health under new spotlight

The first–ever report which highlights children’s special susceptibility to harmful chemicals at different periods of their growth has recently been published by the World Health Organization [WHO]. It shows that the stage at which exposure to chemicals occurs may be just as important as the magnitude of the exposure.

A significant amount of diseases found in children around the globe can be attributed to environmental factors, such as contaminated air and water, pesticides in food, lead in soil, poor sanitation and bad housing as well as poor access to health care and education according to the WHO.

The report says that neglected and malnourished children are worst affected.

Health effects from developmental exposures while still in the womb include miscarriage, still birth, low weight and birth defects; in young children infant mortality, asthma, neurobehavioural and immune system impairment; and in adolescents precocious or delayed puberty may result. Emerging evidence points to an increased risk of cancer and heart disease in adults due to exposure to certain environmental chemicals in childhood say researchers.
