Northern Haiti: Infrastructure hampers hookworm treatment
Programme to improve health system in the community
A grant from the American Food Conservation and Health Foundation to develop a system to treat hookworm infections has been awarded to the Konbit Sante Cap–Haitien Health Partnership, a non–profit organisation, whose aim is to improve the public health system in northern Haiti.
The cost of treatment for the infection is very low, but northern Haiti lacks the health infrastructure to get treatment to the community and, a recent study cited by Konbit Sante found high levels of anaemia among pregnant women.
The first goal of the programme, therefore, is to improve the anaemia status of women, of reproductive age, to improve their quality of life as well as the maternal and birth outcomes. The second goal is to build a sustainable community distribution system that will expand the public health system’s capacity to provide other interventions.
