Hong Kong: Threat to public health is a ‘growing concern’
Grant applications for research into infectious diseases
Research into the SARS outbreak of 2003, which has since been developed to cover a wider range of infectious diseases, such as influenza and multi–drug resistant bacteria, is the concern of the Hong Kong–based Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Diseases which received an initial Governmental grant of $450 million.
The threat to public health from existing and novel infectious agents, says the Fund’s secretariat, is a growing concern and it is hoped that by supporting advanced research it will be possible to develop new techniques to detect and diagnose a range of infectious diseases and to treat their effects.
Applications for grants are welcomed and will be examined by a review board and a panel of local and overseas expert referees who will in turn advise the grant review board and, ultimately, the Research Council.
