Soweto: More money spent on telephone calls than supplies

Babies ‘kept in boxes’ in neo–natal hospital wards

Following a newspaper report that a shortage of cribs [bassinettes] in the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto meant that some babies were left lying in cardboard boxes, an investigation was launched by the Department of Health.

The hospital management professed to know nothing about this problem, but agreed that it should not happen under any circumstances. The number of bassinettes available in the neo–natal department was estimated to fall short of the optimum number of 150 by 31.

The result is that more bassinettes are to be purchased as a matter of urgency, says the Health Department, and the imbalance of expenditure, which meant that more was spent on telephone calls than in the procurement of medical supplies, is now being overhauled with a view to making drastic improvements.

A multi–disciplinary team will be sent from the Gauteng Department of Health to carry out a complete turnaround of procedures and priorities.

For further information on the campaign to improve this hospital’s results, visit the Department of Health website at: www.doh.gov.za.
