New Zealand: Three District Health Boards meet targets

Hospitals performance assessed in two new reports

Two Hospital Benchmark Information reports produced by the Ministry of Health aim to give the public and District Health Boards a clearer idea of hospital performances. They track all public hospitals in New Zealand, measure their success in key areas, allow accurate comparisons to be made between hospitals and help them find ways to improve.

The latest reports, for July to September 2006 and October to December 2006 are the first to be published. They show that hospitals do well in the rapid treatment of life threatening emergency cases and in overall patient satisfaction. Efficiency improvements have seen more people treated as day cases and more admitted on the day of their operation.

But, improvements are needed to shorten the time it takes to treat less serious emergency cases; only three out of the 21 District Health Boards met the target for treating the vast majority of such patients within the recommended 30 minutes. The hospitals concerned will continue to receive attention from health boards to improve their outcomes.
