World Health Organization calls for global action:
Up–to half of all people with severe mental health disorders, and the vast majority of those with mild or moderate disorders, worldwide do not receive any treatment, according to the World Health Organization [WHO].
In many nations when treatment is provided, it takes place in institutional settings, which are associated with stigma and human rights violations.
The WHO, together with The Lancet medical journal, has accumulated the evidence and calls for action to give mental health a higher priority, in a series of six reviews on the subject.
They have targeted health planners in low and middle income states because people with mental health needs are systematically locked out of the benefits open to others in these nations.
The call for action reinforces the WHO global action programme on assisting low and middle income countries to provide mental health care. It estimates that two US dollars per person, per year, in low income countries and 3–4 US dollars in lower–to–middle income countries is needed to deliver a core package of mental health care.
