World Health Organization strategy to beat malaria:
The World Health Organization [WHO] recently issued new global guidance for the use of insecticide treated mosquito nets. The WHO recommends that the nets be long–lasting, distributed freely or subsidised, and used by all in countries where malaria is a common and serious health problem.
In areas where malaria is prevalent and where children and pregnant women are most vulnerable, the WHO recommends their protection should be the immediate priority while progressively achieving full coverage throughout the population. This strategy will lead to better protection of vulnerable groups while protecting all members of the community, says the organisation.
Results from Kenya, achieved through the WHO recommended strategy, show that free mass distribution of long–lasting insecticide nets is a powerful way to quickly and dramatically increase coverage, particularly among the poorest people.
