The Baltic: Regions' experience could benefit other states
Ministers meet in Estonia to discuss health governance
In late August 2007 health ministers and senior decision–makers from the Baltic countries, along with international experts, met in Parnu, Estonia, where they looked into how governance can improve access to healthcare, its efficiency and quality. Also on the agenda was health insurance, how to maintain financial sustainability and accountability in the health sector.
The meeting was part of preparations for the forthcoming World Health Organization [WHO] Ministerial Conference titled, ‘Health Systems, Health and Wealth’, due to take place in June 2008, and where issues, such as health sector governance will be discussed by delegates from 53 WHO European member states.
Dr Nata Menabde, deputy regional director for Europe, of the World Health Organization said, “Baltic countries have good experience in sharing roles and responsibilities among the key players in health systems. To improve performance and accountability in health systems, they have developed and carried out various mechanisms that could benefit to other member states.”
