Palestine: Commission pledges support for improvements

Three–year development programme for mental health

The European Commission has approved the Mental Health Development Project for Palestine, a three–year initiative with a value of 3,400,000 Euros.

The project has five components, namely:

• capacity building in the Ministry of Health with the establishment of a Mental Health Directorate,

• training and education of mental health and primary health care professionals,

• a community education programme,

• patients and family association development,

• evidence based practice development and research.

This project will allow improvements to the mental health system in Palestine to follow–on from the Strategic Operational Plan which was developed and agreed by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization in 2004.
