African states: Congo and Mozambique still highly endemic
Advances made towards leprosy elimination target
According to a recent meeting of regional health ministers, Africa has made considerable success in its goal to eliminate leprosy. Forty–four out of 46 countries have met the elimination target for 2007 and only two countries in the region, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique, are still highly endemic.
Although many African states have reached the leprosy elimination goal at national levels, disparities continue at district levels, and some highly endemic districts have a prevalence rate of more than one case per 10,000 of the population.
The World Health Organization has pledged support to Africa, to design and implement strategies to achieve the elimination of leprosy at district levels.
