Melbourne, Australia, 10–12 September 2008:

The Federation is a partner in Fifth World Conference

Continuing a series that began in 2000, the Fifth World Conference on the Promotion of Mental Health and Prevention of Mental and Behavioral Disorders will take place in Melbourne, Australia, on 10–12 September 2008.

By adopting the theme ‘From Margins to Mainstream: Mental Health and Wellbeing – it’s everybody’s business’, the organisers intend to underline that mental health promotion and the prevention of mental disorders have moved away from the margins of the health agenda. They are now firmly established in mainstream research, policy and practice.

This year the international conference will depart from the previous format by highlighting social determinants of mental health – social participation, violence, discrimination and poverty. In addition, as at the four earlier conferences, progress in research, advocacy, coalition–building, programme implementation and developing workforce capacity will be featured.

Information about the programme is available on the conference website at: www.margins2mainstream.com, which will be updated regularly.

A central feature in the 2008 conference is the organisation of the programme to produce a Charter on promotion and prevention at the end of the meeting. The content of the Charter will be developed from the abstract submissions and from special sessions held at the conference, with a view to gathering international input and integrating the perspectives of speakers and participants.

The host organisation is VicHealth [the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation], which is highly regarded in Australia and internationally for its innovative work. VicHealth has selected the Melbourne Conference Centre as the venue. The co–chairs of the International Scientific Committee are Professors Rob Moodie and Helen Herrman of the University of Melbourne.

The founders of the series are the World Federation for Mental Health, The Clifford Beers Foundation, and The Carter Center Mental Health Program. The inaugural conference at The Carter Center in 2000 was followed by conferences in London [2002, hosted by The Clifford Beers Foundation], Auckland [2004, hosted by the New Zealand Foundation for Mental Health] and Oslo (2006, hosted by Volksne for Barn].

World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2008

The World Federation for Mental Health has selected as this year’s theme ‘Making Mental Health a Global Priority: Scaling Up Services through Citizen Advocacy and Action’. Advocacy has been at the heart of the Federation’s work throughout its existence, and the theme celebrates the 60th anniversary of its founding in London in 1948. The campaign will also support the Lancet Series ‘Call to Action’ which focuses on the need to improve mental health services, especially in low–and middle–income countries.

The Federation is currently developing campaign materials which will be placed on its website [www.wfmh.org.] later in the year, in various languages.

To be placed on a list to obtain the materials on CD–ROM in mid–year, email the programme director, Deborah Maguire, at: wmhdat@wfmh.com. A single copy will be mailed to one address at no charge; a small fee for bulk copies.
