Poor older people: Call for concrete goals and timetables

Bolivian Government urged to protect women’s rights

The Bolivian Government has been urged to address older women’s poverty and ensure that they have the right identity documentation so they can access the services that are theirs by right. The call has come from the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women which monitors the implementation of the International Treaty on Women’s rights.

Lack of identity papers prevents older Bolivian women from voting or being elected to public office, and the committee reports that many poor, older women among the indigenous population in rural areas are denied access to health and social security because they cannot prove their eligibility.

Bolivia is the poorest country in South America and older people are disproportionately poor compared to the general population.

The committee has asked the Government why older women do not have the correct documentation and has further recommended that it establishes concrete goals and timetables to ensure the registration of women. It also called on the Government to address the structural nature of poverty and to adopt measures to ensure their equal access to land, housing, healthcare and social services.
