Queensland: Psychiatrists back changes to protect children
Mandatory risk assessment and care plan for ill parents
An announcement by the Minister of Health that if patients under an involuntary treatment order have parental responsibilities, a risk assessment and care plan before discharge will be mandatory in future has been endorsed by members of the Royal Australasian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists’ [RANZCP] Queensland branch.
Dr Tony Cook, RANZCP Queensland branch spokesman and member of the RANZCP’s Faculty of Child Health and Adolescent Psychiatry, said children’s mental and physical health could be adversely affected by a parent’s mental illness, but that many parents with mental illness provide quality care to their children and that it is important to make case–by–case assessments.
Dr Cook noted the Government’s announcement that Department of Child Safety notifications would be ensured in future. However, he stated, “We do have some reservations. These mainly concern the ability of the Department of Child Safety to handle the workload in a timely and appropriate manner.”
