Arabs Hand–in–Hand with Iraqis:

League launches fund raising campaign for refugees

A 90–day campaign called ‘Arabs Hand–in–Hand with Iraqis’ began recently to raise awareness and funds for hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees through the media by broadcasting feature stories, documentaries, advertisements and other programmes about the plight of refugees to Iraq’s neighbour countries.

The brainchild of Arab Iraqi musician Naseer Shamma, this campaign, run by the Arab League and the United Nations [UN] Refugee Agency [UNHCR], aims to raise millions of dollars to help the estimated 2.2 million Iraqis who are displaced within their own country and the 2 million overseas, most of whom live in the big cities of Syria and Jordan where they are finding it hard to survive as money runs out.

The campaign began with programmes about Iraqi refugees on three Arab satellite channels including Egyptian Satellite Channel. Now more than a dozen national channels in the Arab world are involved, along with celebrities, artists and public figures. Iraqi refugees have appeared on the special programmes and banks were on hand to receive donations and pledges.

The League has already set–up a special account for governments, private sector and individuals to contribute funds in support of displaced Iraqi’s.

In addition to the campaign, the UNHCR is giving direct assistance to some of the most vulnerable refugees and support to governments in the region to help them cope with the huge numbers of Iraqis who have strained local resources, such as the health and education systems.

In a televised message, Amre Moussa, Secretary General of the League of Arab States, said on the campaign’s first day, “Let us keep this day as the beginning of a campaign of solidarity from the Arab world with all Iraqis”.
