Mozambique: Floods destroy households and farmland

Older people’s needs top priority in crisis, says charity

At least 56.000 people have been affected by severe floods in Mozambique, 1,000 households have been destroyed, 37,000 hectares of farmland are under floodwater and many older people are struggling to survive, especially those who look after children orphaned by AIDS.

HelpAge International, together with Help the Aged, plans to ensure that the needs of older people are at the forefront of the emergency response.

HelpAge International will distribute guidelines on how to meet the needs of older people to all agencies working to assist those affected by the floods and will collaborate with partners in the Tete region and other provinces to distribute household and education kits. It will also ensure that rapid assessment guidelines for education and protection are included.

Improved preparation has minimised the impact of the floods and the Government was able to pre–position stocks and resources as a result of a timely red alert. Even so, many older people have not recovered their livelihood which means their ability to be self–reliant is diminished.

And those displaced by floods now living in resettlement areas previously thought safe are feared to be in imminent danger from floods once again. Water levels have begun to rise to critical levels not seen since the great floods of 2,000 and with more rain forecast the emergency response is to be stepped–up in preparation.
