Canada: Trilateral agreement made for nation’s wellbeing

Main parties work together in four priority health areas

Canada’s recently elected Government has signed the first nation’s health agreement with British Columbia and First Nations Leadership Council which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the population, close the gaps in health and ensure that First Nations are fully involved in decision–making with regard to the health of their peoples.

The first agreement of its kind in Canada, it brings together the three main parties and makes them collaborate in a 10–year trilateral agreement. All three parties have committed to action in four priority areas:

The Government says the new health plan will promote better integration and co–ordination of federally and provincially–funded health services. It outlines a shared vision for health and health services in British Columbia and commits all parties to work together to create a new governance structure.

Gordon Campbell, premier of British Columbia, said, “This builds on British Columbia’s first Nations Health Plan released last year that will help us close the gap between First Nations people and other British Columbians in areas like life expectancy, mortality, youth suicide, infant mortality, diabetes rates and childhood obesity.

He continued, “It will also increase the number of First Nations health professionals and supports our other initiatives, such as the appointment this year of British Columbia’s first–ever aboriginal health physician advisor.”

The aboriginal community have a valuable insight to share that will improve health services according to Tony Clement, Federal Health Minister, who went on to say that First Nations in British Columbia can have an effective role to play in the design and delivery of health care services for their people, and responsibility for achieving results.
