G8: Call to leaders to back their commitment with actions
UN–backed global fund welcomes rich nations’ pledge
The United Nations–backed [UN] global fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria has lauded the recommitment from the group of eight leading industrialised nations [G8] at the recent summit in Germany to universal access to HIV/AIDS treatment, but warned that commitments must be turned into tangible action and urged the leaders to step–up their response.
UNAIDS says that the 11 million people estimated to need anti–retroviral treatment by 2010 may have been underestimated by up to 50 per cent. As such, AIDS must be a top priority for the G8 this year and every year – in commitments and action, the agency said.
