Australia: Beyond alcohol and drugs misuse, says Council

Tackle lifestyle issues to help indigenous communities

Recent reports have linked mental illness, alcohol and drug misuse in Australia’s indigenous communities, but the Mental Health Council of Australia warns, such problems are not confined to these populations alone.

If indigenous communities are to see long–term, sustainable benefits from efforts to tackle drug, alcohol, child abuse and mental health problems, the Council says the Government must address issues, such as access to housing, health care and education; as well as issues of capacity in terms of personnel, training and leadership. It also needs to ensure those from indigenous communities have access to some form of meaningful activity in employment and recreation.

The Council highlights positive models, such as the Northern Territory Living with Alcohol Program, which have proven to be effective in changing the health status of indigenous children but lack the resources they need, as the sort of initiatives it would be wise to build on.
