Australia: Initiative to improve co–ordination of clinical care

Mental health nurses to ‘close the gap’ for patients

A five–year, Australian Government programme designed to improve the co–ordination of clinical care for people with severe mental health needs has been warmly welcomed by the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses.

The programme will allow specialist mental health nurses to work with GPs and psychiatrists to provide better care to greater numbers of patients outside of hospitals and institutions.

Dr Stephen Elson, President of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses said there has often been a substantial gap between the care and treatment offered by the primary health sector and that offered by specialist mental health services. This new approach aims to close that gap, especially for those who would most likely have fallen through it in the past.
