New control centre to focus on risks of cannabis use
A new cannabis control and prevention centre is to be established by a national consortium led by the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, the Australian Minister for Ageing, Christopher Pyne, has announced. The Minister said the centre would play an important role in the provision of information, particularly to young people, on the risks associated with cannabis use.
The centre will support the health sector and other services that work with those who have cannabis–related problems and their families. It will also back innovative approaches to delivering treatment for those with cannabis problems, including dependency, as well as provide education about dangers associated with the drug.
The Government will provide more than $12 million over four years for the centre which is part of its national illicit drug strategy.
