Asia: Afghanistan

New agreement pledges better help for mine victims

People injured by landmines in Afghanistan are to receive increased assistance since a new agreement between the Government and the United Nations Mine Action Centre for Afghanistan [UNMCA]. The June pact signed with the Ministry of Public Health will boost support for the integration of disabilities issues into public health services say the UN.

Under a separate agreement, UNMCA will support the Ministry of Education with a campaign to raise awareness on landmines within schools and communities, which includes the provision of risk education information and the promotion of inclusive education for children with disabilities.

The UNMCA has co–ordinated activities of the Mine Action programme for Afghanistan since 1989 which involves survey and clearance of mines as well as mine awareness and supporting victims of the weapons. It has successfully cleared an area of more than 1 billion square meters, destroyed over 323,000 anti–personnel mines, 18,500 anti–tank mines and more than seven million pieces of unexploded ordnance.
