Global: Help for disaster relief, war and conflict areas
Muslim and Christian charities work in aid partnership
UK–based Muslim Aid and US–based United Methodist Committee on Relief [UMCOR] recently signed a partnership to build peace and help relieve poverty across the globe. At an official ceremony held in London, both organisations made an official agreement that could result in around £7.5 million in direct relief to disaster, war and conflict ridden areas of the world, including Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
Muslim Aid and UMCOR began working together in Sri Lanka after the tsunami disaster. They were among the few organisations able to provide relief when fighting broke out in Mutur in 2006 and their successful collaboration in the region made the two faith–based groups cement the potential in a worldwide partnership to achieve their shared goals.
This partnership aims to lead to better access into communities where aid is needed most, for example, Indonesia the world’s largest Muslim country.
There are unique links between faith–based non–governmental organisations and their grassroots faith leaders and now the partnership can work with local people with knowledge to better identify problems and provide aid directly at ground level.
