United Kingdom: Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry
Treat dementia as a national health priority, says report
A report from the National Audit Office which calls for dementia to be treated as a national health priority has won the support of the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry at the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the United Kingdom.
Dr Anderson, chair of the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry said: “It is a terrible indictment of a developed country’s response to this desperately serious condition that, until 2005, the Department of Health has shown dementia little attention, that the United Kingdom is in the bottom third in Europe for access to anti–dementia drugs, that up to 50 per cent of patients are not diagnosed and only one–third of doctors have adequate local specialist support.”
The Royal College of Psychiatrists says it would welcome an invitation from the Department of Health to work with them and other key organisations to develop a first–class service for people with dementia and their carers.
