Egypt: United Nations Children's Fund backs initiative
Female genital mutilation is outlawed by Government
Following the recent death of a 12 year–old girl with female genital mutilation, the Egyptian Government has made moves to stop this traditional practice, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund [UNICEF].
Egypt’s health and population Minister has issued a decree that fully criminalizes the procedure and which closes a loophole that involved health professionals performing the operation; a decision that has won support from many quarters in Egypt and UNICEF.
UNICEF estimates that three million girls and women are subject to female genital mutilation and cutting every year in Africa.
