Yemen: Improve access to water, more schools and roads

United Kingdom aid to meet 2010 development goals

British International Development Minister, Shahid Malik, recently signed a new 10–year development partnership agreement with the Government of Yemen during a visit to the country.

The United Kingdom [UK] support to Yemen will grow to £50 million a year by 2010 in a bid to fight poverty, enhance respect for human rights, meet millennium development goals and advance Yemen’s reform agenda.

The Yemen has plans to tackle its poverty, high levels of adult and child literacy and water scarcity. The money from the UK will expand education, especially for girls, improve job opportunities to tackle the country's high unemployment rate and support the Government in financial management, policing and justice.

Mr Malik also announced that £7.5 million will go to the Yemen Social Development Fund to tackle poverty by giving communities direct support to improve access to water and build more schools and roads.

Further support in water management, which is critical to Yemen’s future, is under consideration by the UK Government.
