United Kingdom: First for Essex health professional
When it comes to a therapeutic activity, drumming may not be the first thing to spring to mind, but according to one health professional at South Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust [SEPT], England, it really works.
Chris Baron, pictured, should know, for he is the first person in the world to receive a diploma in therapeutic drumming.
A senior forensic occupational therapy technician who works at Runwell Hospital, Chris has been a fan of drums since he was a child. Since he started working for SEPT in 2004 he has been given the opportunity to develop his hobby into an integral part of his career.
Chris, 36, said, “About a year ago when I joined my current team I was given the opportunity to extend my skills and undertake further training so I asked if I could take the course leading to the Diploma in Therapeutic Drumming.”
He was the first person to complete the course and receive his diploma from the School of Therapeutic Drumming, which is recognised by the British Complementary Medicine Association. In order to gain the diploma, Chris has had to undertake around 120 hours of training involving both practical activities and academic theory.
He explained, “The activity of drumming can be traced back throughout history in nearly every culture in the world. It is one of the oldest healing activities known to mankind, and is currently receiving heightened interest on a global scale.
“Drum circles are growing in popularity worldwide as people are rediscovering how drumming promotes a sense of self–worth, helps relaxation, is very stimulating and improves self–esteem.”
Chris runs drumming sessions on wards across Runwell Hospital, on both a one–to–one basis and in groups of up to seven people.
Chris added: “Therapeutic drumming is a holistic activity that has a positive effect on mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health. It is loads of fun and something anyone can do – no musical training is required.”
