Asia: Organisation’s work in residential schools
Foundation grant will support girl’s education in India
The Care organisation recently announced a grant from the Goldman Sachs Foundation to strengthen education programmes for teenage girls in India. The grant will support Care’s work in residential schools in India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh, where less than half of females are literate.
The initial phase of the project will improve the quality of, and access to education in 27 Government–operated schools that serve at least 2,000 disadvantaged girls, in co–operation with government officials. Access to improved maths, language and science education in Government schools should be ensured, which will also provide training to 108 teachers, improve teaching materials and methodologies and monitor the progress of students.
Sarah Bouchie, Care’s director of basic and girls education, said, “When girls go to school, entire communities benefit, through reduced birth rates, healthier children and improved family incomes. We’re grateful to Goldman Sachs Foundation for sharing our vision of education to a better future.”
