USA: State statistics survey to help plan services
National study on depression in youths and adults
New data on rates of depression taken from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s [SAMHSA] National Survey on Drug Use and Health, shows that among 12 to 17 year–olds rates of a major depressive episode [MDE] in the past year were highest in Idaho and Nevada and among the lowest in Louisiana and South Dakota.
Rates of past year MDE among adults aged 18 and over were among the highest in Utah and Rhode Island while Hawaii and New Jersey scored some of the lowest. The survey showed few statistically significant differences across states in the rates of past year MDE among youths and adults, and the report did not look at reasons for the interstate variances.
The prevalence of MDE in each state is based on standard definitions and survey methods applied uniformly throughout the nation.
SAMHSA administrator Terry Cline said, “The complexities associated with mental health problems leave states with a heavy responsibility to provide effective and responsive mental health promotion, treatment and recovery support services. These data add to the information state mental health authorities use to plan for and allocate resources.”
