Palestine: Red Cross arbitrator in Gaza
Surgical teams and aid for hospitals in latest crisis
Since renewed fighting broke out in Palestine, the International Committee of the Red Cross [ICRC] has sent surgical teams, drugs and other medical supplies to assist medical staff in Gaza’s hospitals.
An evacuation of critically wounded people to Israeli hospitals has also taken place. An ICRC specialist in emergency medical services has been dispatched to Gaza to help co–ordinate these transfers as the ICRC acts as an intermediary between health officials in Gaza and the Israeli authorities.
People who require sophisticated treatment not available in Gaza, such as those with cancer and kidney diseases need to be transferred, as well as people injured in the conflict, since the Gaza hospitals are without the resources to deal effectively with such complex cases.
